Overview

Introduction

The Administering Microsoft SQL and Azure SQL Database Solutions program provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills to manage, secure, optimize, and automate SQL Server and Azure SQL environments. This course covers database deployment models (IaaS, PaaS), migration strategies, performance monitoring, query optimization, automation of administrative tasks, and high availability and disaster recovery (HADR) planning. With hands-on labs, participants will learn to provision resources, configure security, troubleshoot performance issues, and apply cloud-based administration practices. By the end of this training, attendees will be able to confidently administer SQL workloads both on-premises and in Azure, ensuring resilience, scalability, and compliance.

Day 1: Introduction to Azure SQL & DBA Role

Understand the role of Azure Database Administrator and SQL/Azure platform options.
Explore SQL Server VM, Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, and other database options.
Hands-on lab: Provision SQL Server on Azure and validate connectivity.

Day 2: Planning & Implementing Data Platform Resources

Deploy SQL Server and Azure SQL resources via IaaS and PaaS.
Learn migration strategies and resource planning for SQL workloads.
Hands-on lab: Deploy Azure SQL Database using ARM templates.

Day 3: Implementing a Secure Environment

Configure authentication, authorization, and encryption for SQL databases.
Implement network security, access controls, and compliance measures.
Hands-on lab: Secure SQL Server and Azure SQL environments.

Day 4: Monitoring, Optimization & Query Performance

Monitor SQL database performance and troubleshoot issues.
Optimize queries using indexes, statistics, and execution plan analysis.
Hands-on lab: Identify and fix performance bottlenecks with Query Store.

Day 5: Automation & High Availability/Disaster Recovery (HADR)

Automate administrative tasks, notifications, and maintenance jobs.
Implement HADR strategies: Always On Availability Groups, geo-replication, and backups.
Hands-on lab: Configure HADR and automate SQL management tasks.
